Unlike the domestic trips until that day, President Ghazi Mustafa Kemal’s first visit to İstanbul in the Republican period was followed with great interest and curiosity. This visit created the most important agenda of politics as well as of Istanbul and Ankara press. Each stage of the trip, which would last about three months, was followed with great care and caution. British Ambassador George R. Clerk, who preferred to stay in İstanbul instead of being in Ankara, was also closely interested in Ghazi’s visit to İstanbul after a gap of nearly eight years. Immediately after the official statements about the trip, Clerk put this extremely important development on his agenda and began to report to Foreign Office. The other nationwide trips of Ghazi had been followed closely by British Embassy officials. However, according to Clerk the first visit to Istanbul in the Republican period was extremely critical and important in terms of bearing different meanings than other trips because Ghazi came to İstanbul as the destroyer of Sultanate and Caliphate and the founder of a new state in Ankara. All the details of this first visit to Istanbul were reported to Foreign Office by George R. Clerk. Besides, the reports include assessments that reveal Clerk’s outlook on Turkey in the year 1927.
