Özet
1833- 1906 yılları arasında yaşayan Aleksandır Karatodori Tanzimat devrinde yetişen devlet adamlarından biridir. Saray hekimi olan babası İstefanaki'nin nüfuzuyla Tercüme Odası'nda göreve başlayan Aleksandır Karatodori, daha sonra yüksek öğrenim için Paris'e gitmiştir. Temelde matematik eğitimi alan Aleksandır, hukuk alanında yaptığı doktora ile Tanzimat devrinin ender devlet adamlarından biridir. Avrupa'dan döndüğünde Meclis-i Vâlâ'da mütercim olarak göreve başlayan Aleksandır Karatodori, Deniz Ticâret Mahkemesi Reisliği, Girit Vali Müşâvirliği, Ticâret Nezâreti Müsteşarlığı, iki kez Hâriciye Nezâreti Müsteşarlığı, Roma Sefirliği, Nâfia Nâzırlığı, Berlin Kongresi Birinci Murahhaslığı, Hâriciye Nâzırlığı, Nâfia Komisyonu Üyeliği, Sisam Beyliği, iki kez Girit Valiliği, Mütercim-i evvel ve Şûrâ-yı Devlet Azâlığı ve bu vazifeler sırasında kısa süreli birçok diplomatik görevlerde bulunarak yarım yüzyıla yakın bir süre bir Tanzimat bürokratı ve diplomatı olarak kapısında büyüdüğü Osmanlı İmparatorluğuna hizmet etmiştir. Meslek yaşamının en dikkat çekici evrelerinden biri, imparatorluğun ilk gayrimüslim Hâriciye Nâzırı olarak hükümette yer aldığı dönem olmuştur Aleksandır Karatodori, Tanzimat dönemi devlet adamlarının birçoğu gibi ilimle ve cemiyet işleriyle de uğraşmıştır. Matematik, iktisat, arkeoloji ve tarih gibi ilimlerin yanı sıra edebiyat ve şiir gibi sanat dallarıyla, eser ve makale yazacak derecede meşgul olmuştur. Ayrıca Rumca, Türkçe, Arapça, Farsça, Latince, Fransızca, İtalyanca, İngilizce ve Almanca olmak üzere Doğu ve Batıdan toplam dokuz dil bilmekteydi. Öte yandan, Cemiyyet-i İlmiyye-i Osmâniyye, Tercüme Cemiyyeti ve Dersaâdet Rum Cemiyet-i Edebiyyesi gibi ilmî cemiyetlerin çeşitli faaliyetlerine iştirak ederek, bilgi birikimini Osmanlı toplumuyla paylaşmaya çalışmıştır. Tanzimat'la beraber Millet Sistemi'nin yerine oturtulmaya çalışılan Osmanlıcılık prensibine iyi bir örnek teşkil eden Aleksandır Karatodori, meslek yaşamı boyunca görev aldığı birimlerde yurtsever bir bürokrat ve diplomat olarak devlet çıkarlarını ve toprak bütünlüğünü korunmaya gayret göstermiştir.
Alexander Charatheodory, living between the years 1833- 1906, one of the the statesman who grwe up in the Tanzimat Period. Alexander Charatheodory started the job in the Cahmber of Translation by the influence of his father, İstefanaki who was a palace physician. Then he went to Paris for higher education. Alexander basicly training in the field of Mathematics was the precious stateman of Tanzimat Period with his decorate in the field of law. When he turned back from Europe, he started the job as a translator at the Supreme Court, besides of being President of the Admiralty Court, Counsellor of Girit Governor, Deputy Minister of Commerce, Deputy Minister of Foreing Affairs as twice, Rome Ambassador, the Minister of Public Works, First Plenipotentiary at Berlin Congress, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, A Member of the Council of Public Works, Prince of Samos, Governor of Girit twice, First Translator and a member of the Council of State and in addition to these duties, had being in diplomatic issues in a short time, as a diplomat and a bureaucrat of Tanzimat he served for half of a century to Ottoman Empire in which he grwe up. It was one of the most remarkable period that he had taken part in the government as the first non-moslem Minister of Foreign Affairs. Alexander Charatheodory, like many of the statesman of the Tanzimat Period, concerned with science and society affairs. Mathematics, archeology, economics, and history, he also concerned with art such as literature and poetry that could even create works and write articles as well. In addition, he knew totally nine languages from the East and the West, such as Greek, Turkish, Arabic, Farsian, Latin, French, Itailan, English and German. On the other hand, he tried to share his knowledge with Ottoman Society joining the acitivities of Science Committees such as Cemiyyet-i İlmiyye-I Osmâniyye, Tercüme Cemiyyeti and Dersaâdet Rum Cemiyyeti Edebiyyesi. Charatheodory, was a good model of Osmanlıcılık principles which were tried to built instead of Millet System. As a patriotic bureaucrat and a diplomat, he tried to protect the state interests and territorial integrity in every office he took part.
