Özet

Objective: Essential fatty acids are essential for survival of humans and other mammals, and they can not be synthesized in the body: hence, they have to be obtained by the diet. There are two types of essential fatty acids in the body, the omega-6 (?6) series derived from linoleic acid and the omega-3 (?3) series derived from linolenic acid. In this study we aimed to examine plasma essential fatty acid levels, omega-6/omega-3 (?6/?3) ratio and these fatty acids in the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference in healty subjects living in our region. Material and Methods: This study was performed on 91 (31 male 60 female) healthy people living in the city of Konya aged 18-70 years. There was no complaints and symptoms of the healthy people. Fatty acid levels were measured by Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry technique. Results: There were no significant differences between plasma essential fatty acid levels of the male and female healthy subjects. There were significantly positive correlations between plasma ?-6 fatty acid levels with BMI and waist circumference in the female healty subjects. Plasma ?6/?3 ratio of healthy male and female subjects was found as follows: 20.35 ± 14.7 and 20.16 ± 13.5 respectively. Conclusion: Plasma ?6/?3 ratio of healthy people living in our region is much higher than the rate recommended by world health organization. Furhermore, in this study show there is positive associations between BMI and waist circumference with plasma ?-6 fatty acid levels. Trigger many diseases, including obesity, the high ?-6 fatty acid content in the diet should be limited. Copyright © 2011 by Türkiye Klinikleri.
