Abstract
Objective: Retained surgical compress is a rare postoperative complication. Computed tomographic and ultrasonographic findings of retained surgical compresses have been reported rarely. The aim of this case report was to define US and CT findings of retained surgical compress. Case report: A woman aged 31 years suffered from left upper quadrant fullness had a partial gastrectomy history 6 years ago. The plain abdominal radiography showed a large homogeneous, well circumscribed soft tissue density. The computed tomography showed a well-defined round mass with a thin wall, internal heterogeneous densities with a wavy, striped and fluid collection appearance. The ultrasonography showed a hypoechoic mass containing highly echogenic foci with a posterior shadow. Conclusion: Computed tomographic and ultrasonographic findings together with a history of surgery permitted the correct preoperative diagnosis of a retained foreign body.
