dc.description.abstractThe ancient city of Kelenderis which is very important for Anatolian Archaeology, is a harbor city located in the Middle Rough Cilicia. The city, today, is within the boundaries of Aydincik district in Mersin. The Eastern Sigillata A Group Ceramics, which constitute this study, were found in excavations, beside the Kelenderis harbor, conducted between 1989 and 1992 of the Lower City Trench in the area called the Lower City region. This ceramic group, which is called Eastern Sigillata A (ESA), began to be produced after the second half of the 2nd century BC. and used until the beginning of the 3rd century AD. by spreading to the large geographical region, especially to the Eastern Mediterranean, what is shown to be the production place. In antiquity, they functioned as luxury service vessels in daily life. 12 different forms belonging to this group used as service vessels of food and beverages were identified in Kelenderis Lower City Trench. Among these forms are bowls, cups and plates. The earliest examples of these date back 1st century BC., and the latest examples date back 2nd century AD. This group of material reveals crucial information about the socio-economic and commercial relations of the city besides the fact that ancient city of Kelenderis was an important settlement of the region in the Early Roman Imperial period.en_US
