Özet
A 48-year-old male patient admitted to ophthalmology department with the complaint of decreased vision for one year in both eyes. The patient had been diagnosed with neurosyphilis at the infectious diseases department 6 months ago and had been treated with penicillin. Visual acuity was 0.3 in right eye and count fingers at 3 meters in the left eye. Fundus examination revealed pale optic disc with blurred margin, and vascular attenuation of the optic disc in both eyes. In visual field test, absolute scotoma in superior temporal quadrant, superior arcuate defect and visual field defect in the inferior temporal quadrant were present in both eyes. The optic atrophy was considered secondary to syphilis, and the patient was asked to follow up because of the possibility of syphilis recurrence. Early diagnosis of neurosyphilis and its complications are very important. Clinicians should take into consideration syphilis in all cases with optic neuropathy in their rutine practice, especially in sexually active men and provide the best treatment option to the patients in a multidisciplinary management.
