Özet

Objective: To determine the effect of concentric, combined concentric-eccentric and isometric exercise programs on pain, functional capacity and muscle strength of patients with bilateral knee osteoarthritis (OA). Materials and Methods: Eighty patients selected randomly from the patients that apply with knee pain and take the diagnosis of bilateral knee osteoarthritis. The patients randomly assigned into four groups. The patients in the first group performed concentric isokinetic, the second group performed combined concentric-eccentric isokinetic and the patients in the third group performed isometric exercise, 3 days a week for 8 weeks. And the fourth group was the non-treatment, control group. We performed to all patients visual analogue scale (VAS) at rest and activity, Western Ontario and McMasters Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Short Form 36 (SF 36) and maximal muscle strength of knee extensor and flexor muscle groups, measurements at the beginning and after at 4th, 8th and 20th weeks. Results: All training groups showed marked decreases in pain scores and increases in functional capacity and muscle strength. We didn't find significant loss in these parameters after a 12-week non-treatment period (p<0.00-p<0.05). Conclusion: These findings emphasized the role of exercises and the isokinetic technology in OA.
