Özet
In vivo and in vitro studies point out that thyroid hormones have an important role in oxidative stress (Karbownik and Lewinski 2003). Thyroid hormones act on the mitochondria by regulating the energy metabolism (Goglia et al., 2002). High concentrations of thyroid hormones affect oxygen metabolism and stimulate formation of free radicals in mitochondria (Sewerynek et al., 1999). It was shown that not only hyperthyroidism, but also hypothyroidism caused changes in oxidant and antioxidant systems (Berzinska-Slebodzinska 2001, Sewerynek et al., loc. cit). Hypermetabolic condition in hyperthyroidism was associated with an increase in free radical formation and lipid peroxide levels (Venditti et al., 1997). it was established in a study carried out on hypothyroid rats that there was an increase in protein carbonyl and hydrogen peroxide in testis homogenates. However, it was noted that triiodothyronine administration did not change hydrogen peroxide in these subjects, but further increased protein carbonyl content (Choudhury et al., 2003). Studies investigating the effect of thyroxine administration on oxidative stress in different organs showed that damage in the kidneys was more than the damage in the liver (Beckett et al., 1986). The present study was carried out to determine how experimental hyperthyroidism induced by L-thyroxin affects lipid peroxidation in both testis and kidney tissues of rats.
