Folk stories, which have become popular due to their special nature meeting the fictional need in Turkish cultural ecology and sociocultural context, include some epic characteristics and they have been adopted as a type that is consequent of an epic story by some researchers. Köroğlu performance, which were created in oral cultural environment and then arisen in written and electronic culture, exhibit epic characteristics since they have epic themes. Köroğlu narratives, which have been built on heroism and love, have several branches. Köroğlu narratives are generally classified as “Western version” and “Eastern version”. Köroğlu narratives change, vary, and consequently get originalization by gaining diverse characteristics through the hands of a performer. For example, Köroğlu, who names the narratives and is the leading actor in them, can be an “epic hero” in a performance of a minstrel; a “folk tale hero” in a presentation of a folk tale performer; or a “story hero” in the hands of a public storyteller. In addition, it can be even observed that Köroğlu is a “joke hero” who makes jokes in some of the performance. This situation can be viewed as a proof of the relationship or transitivity among the oral narrative types. The review we have is the cassette record of Köroğlu performance by Süleyman Tokay (Süleyman Usta), who travel village by village and city by city and at the same time a tinman and stonemason. This 71-minute performance having about 5340 words by Süleyman Usta, who is a culture conveyer, was recorded by an amateur reviewer through non-oriented review method in Gümüştepe (Yapaltın) village of Şarkışla district of Sivas province in the year of 1981. In this recorded narrative, liit is observed that a humorous style and narrative techniques was used in a manner that reflects the characteristic of the performer. It is additionally observed that such types as rhyme, proverb, and idiom are used. Based on all these reasons, this narrative study, which is reviewed from Süleyman Tokay, shows the characteristics of “Western version”, and is a version of “the Branch of Köroğlu-Hanım Nigâr, Hasan Bey-Telli Hanım”, was named as “The Master Süleyman Version of Köroğlu Narrative As a Type of Hasan Bey” and it is preferred to present the review text without changing its oral characteristics so that the performance is attributed to the master of the tradition and its own sociocultural environment. © 2019, Milli Folklor Dergisi).
