M: The aim of this study was to investigate whether professional incentives and participation in decision-making affected organizational commitment. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted between November and December 2012 with 422 physicians assigned to a training and research hospital in Ankara. A study sample was selected, and an attempt was made to reach all physicians. As result, 650 questionnaires were distributed, 530 (81.5%) of which were completed and returned. A total of 108 questionnaires that were incomplete or completed erroneously were excluded for our evaluation. The remaining 422 questionnaire forms were evaluated within the context of this study. RESULTS: Based on the study results, it was observed that general organizational commitment scores among the physicians were at a moderate level (2.98±0.27), while the attitudes towards professional incentives and participation towards decision-making were lower (2.68±0.67 and 2.35±0.56, respectively) in comparison. The general organization commitment scores of physicians with administrative duties in addition to their tasks as physicians was higher than the scores of physicians without administrative duties (p=0.005). In addition, the general organizational commitment scores (p=0.033) and normative commitment scores (p=0.027) of physicians in the group with 21-30 years of service were statistically significantly higher than the scores of the other groups. It was determined that a statistically significant and positive relationship existed between the general organizational commitment of physicians and the professional incentives and participation to decision-making (r=0.215, p<0.001 and r=0.260, p<0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: Based on these results, it is possible to state that in order to ensure employee commitment (which is gradually becoming more important for organizations with each passing day), it is imperative for managers to make greater use of professional incentives and to place more emphasis on ensuring that workers also participate in the decision-making processes. © 2014 Gulhane Military Medical Academy.
