dc.description.abstractPalace, which was used as the residence of the rulers in Turkic States, had an important place in the bureaucratic life of the states. In the palace, which was also the central office of the state, an organization occurred. There were several officials of all positions in the palace organization. One of these officials was a sergeant who fulfilled important services. Actually, the origin of the position of sergeant dates back to the pre-Islamic period. The title of sergeant was firstly seen during the period of the Gokturks. The term of sergeant was also used by the Uighurs, the Patzinaks, the Cumans, the Hungarians and the Khazars. The title of sergeant was used by the Karakhanids, the Ghaznevids, the Great Seljuk Empire, the Kharzem Shah State, the Ayyubids, the Sultanate of Rum, Anatolian Beyliks, the Mamluks, the Ottomans, in addition to that it is still used in the Turkish army today. In this study, the historical development process of the term of sergeant in the Turkic States will be analyzed at first. After that, taking the etymology and meanings of the word sergeant into consideration, the duties of sergeants will be tried to be revealed. For this purpose, especially the word sergeant and its origins in the dictionaries and sources will be studied. Then, the meaning of that word in Turkic languages in various periods will be identified. The duties of sergeants will be revealed with reference to these meanings. The rank of sergeant and its duties in the Seljuks of Rum will be enlightened by considering the historical process and giving examples.en_US
