Specific energy is defined as the amount of energy required to cut a unit volume of rock. Specific energy value is one of the most popular method in order to predict the efficiency of mechanical excavators. This value can be derived from small and full-scale laboratory rock cutting experiments. Chisel tool geometry is very important for more effective and economical excavation performance. For this reason it is important to determine chisel tool geometry not only reducing mechanical strength of tool but also keeping the specific energy in a suitable level during the cutting. In this study linear rock cutting tests were performed on seven different natural stone samples obtained from near Konya using cutting tools with 0°, 15°, 30° and 45° sideways angles at different cutting conditions (depth of cut, rake angle, clearence angle etc.) and cuttability properties of the samples were determined. In this study, we attemped to determine the optimum cutting geometry by investigating effect of sideways angles on cutting performance keeping constant rake and clearence angles. As a results of this study effect of chisel tool geometry on specific energy and usability of the experimental results for performance prediction of some excavation machines were investigated.en_US
