EVALUATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS LEVEL OF FARMERS IN AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES IN TURKEY: THE CASE OF PROVINCE OF KONYA, TURKEY

Özet
In recent years, the world population has considerably increased, which means more people to be fed all around the world. In spite of this, agricultural lands are limited and it has become a necessity to produce more yield per unit area. Farmers have used intensive chemical fertilisers to increase yield in agricultural practices to meet the increasing demand for food. However, environmental problems have begun to emerge due to intensive agricultural production in the world. Especially, the problems like pollution of water and soil sources, loss of bio-diversity, extensive chemical usage due to increasing disease resistance and harmful residues in foods have come into prominence. The main aim of this study is to evaluate consciousness level and opinions of environmentally oriented farmers. The main material of the study includes data that have been collected from 67 farmers by face to face interviews. 'Stratified Sampling Method' has been used in the method of the study. According to the findings, it has been determined that farmers use chemicals unconsciously in order to achieve high yield and protect their yield from diseases and weeds. Moreover, it has been found that farmers ignore the negative impacts like land desertification and poisonous residues in food that threaten human health. Extensive trainings should be done to decrease improper chemical use that leads to negative environmental effects. Further, fertilisation based on soil analysis should be encouraged and inspections should be closely carried out.
