In order to determine the relationship between ascorbic acid level and senile cataract, plasma and nucleus ascorbic acid levels of 60 patients with various types of senile cataracts were compared with plasma ascorbic acid levels of twenty age and sex matched healthy controls with translucent lenses. The difference between plasma ascorbic acid level of the patients with senile cataracts and that of the control group was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Also, the difference in plasma and nucleus acid levels was not statistically significant when the subjects were evaluated according to the sex (p>0.05). When patients with senile cataracts vere evaluated according to the cataract type, the difference in the plasma ascorbic acid level among the patients was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Only the difference between the nucleus ascorbic acid level of the patients with mature cataract and that of the patients with the order types of cataracts was statistically significant (p<0.05). In conclusion this study indicates that, the nucleus ascorbic acid level decreases in advanced phases of cataract, but this is not related to plasma ascorbic acid level.
