Fecal specimens from 63 calves and 77 healthy cows (Out of 77 cows, 63 were dams of calves) were examined for the presence of bovine coronavirus (BCV) antigens by ELISA. Coronavirus was detected in 2 (3.1%) of 63 calves while not detected in any of the cows. Serum samples from 36 of 63 diarrheic calves and from 46 of 77 cows were also tested for coronavirus specific antibodies by competitive ELISA. Nine (25%) of 36 calves and 35 (76%) of the 46 cows were seropositive. Two fecal samples that were detected to be BCV antigen positive by ELISA were also inoculated into Vero, MDBK and HRT-18 cell cultures. BCV was not isolated from two faecal samples after 5 blind passages on the cell lines.
