dc.description.abstract | Magnetic nanoparticles have been attracting much interest in the fields of advanced biological and medical applications such as drug delivery, magnetic resonance imaging, and array-based assaying as well as in the fields of separation science. Although, the most suitable matrix will always depend on the future application of the material, organic polymers have been often a suitable choice owing to their high process ability and versatility. The in situ precipitation of the magnetic particles in a polymeric matrix is an excellent method to control the mean size and size dispersion of a nanoparticles population. The organic based magnetic nanoparticles have been recently used many applications such as separation chemistry which is depend on removal of heavy metal ion and toxic oxyanions from aqueous solute, quantitative pharmacokinetic analysis of the uptake of nanoparticles in the vasculature, brain, and glioma and tumor uptake etc. This review describes synthesis of organic based-iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles with coated silica based materials or some organic compounds and the preparation of different substituted calixarene-based magnetic nanoparticles. It has been also discussed about their characterization. Besides, we have described exhaustive some of the possible applications of both organic-based magnetic nanoparticles and various calixarene based magnetic nanoparticles in the different fields, especially in the separation science. Finally, we have addressed some relevant findings on the importance of having well-defined synthetic routes to produce materials. © 2012 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
