Abstract
The objective of this study was to estimate organ doses and whole-body effective doses from positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scan using [fluorine-18]-fluoro-2-deoxyD-glucose (18F-FDG) in adult patients and to assess the CT component contribution to organ and wholebody doses. The lifetime attributable risk (LAR) of cancer associated with whole-body 18F-FDG PET/CT scan for adult patients was also estimated in this study. The [18F-FDG] PET/CT scan was conducted on 204 adult patients (90 females and 114 males). The CT-Expo v2.5-Demo software was used to estimate the external effective doses from the CT scans. The internal effective doses from the PET scans were estimated using the organ weighting factors provided by International Commision on Radiological Protection (ICRP) publication 103 and the uptake coefficients of 18F-FDG provided by ICRP publication 106. The LARs of cancer were computed by adopting the approximation suggested in the BEIR VII (Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation) report. CT is the primary contributor to the effective dose in the whole-body 18F-FDG PET/BT scan protocol. Since PET/CT scans are related to a high dose and a risk of developing cancer, it was important to balance the advantages and risks before conducting any scans. This is especially important for younger patients and those who are overweight.
