Özet
Tarihi ve toplumsal olguları anlamada sadece arşiv belgelerinden faydalanmak, olayların geçişleri esnasındaki boşluğu kapatamamaktadır. Bu boşluğu kapatmakta öznel ve edebi bir metin olan seyahatnameleri de dâhil etmek gereklidir. Bu çalışmada Ahmet Mithat Efendi'nin seyahatnamesi esas alınarak, on dokuzuncu yüzyıl Avrupa'sının ekonomik özellikleri, eğitim ve kültürel kurumları, sosyolojik dinamikleri, toplumsal mekânları tartışılmıştır. Ahmet Mithat, ilim ve teknik yönden Avrupa'nın gelişmişliğini anlatmak için bu seyahatnameyi kaleme almıştır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, seyahatin sosyolojik imkânı bağlamında bir Osmanlı entelektüeli ve seyyahı olan Ahmet Mithat Efendi perspektifinden Avrupa'ya bakışının farklı yönlerini ortaya çıkarmaktır. Çalışmada içerik analizi yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Bu yöntemi kullanmak, seyahat metnini anlamayı ve metin yorumunun ön plâna çıkarıldığı bir analiz yöntemi oluşturmayı sağlamıştır. İçerik analiziyle; seyahatnamenin, tarihi arka plânını açıklaması açısından, sayıca fazla olan metin yığınından, ortak bilgiler taranmış ve değerlendirme yapılmıştır. Metinden elde edilen içerikler tematik analize tabi tutulmuştur. Tematik analiz yaklaşımıyla metnin bütününe işaret eden, ekonomi, politika, sembol, eğitim, sanat, kültür ve medeniyet gibi temalar bulunmuştur. Seyahati boyunca Avrupa'ya eleştirel yaklaşan Ahmet Mithat, Avrupa'nın kurumlarını incelerken zaman zaman mukayeseler yapmıştır. Ahmet Mithat Efendi'ye göre, Avrupa toplumu, ilim ve teknik yönden ileri seviyededir. Bu bakımdan Ahmet Mithat, Avrupa'nın maddî olarak örnek alınması, ancak bunu yaparken, Doğu'nun manevî yönlerinin terk edilmemesi gerektiğini ortaya koymuştur. Osmanlı'nın bir değişime ihtiyacı vardır. Ahmet Mithat'a göre bir medeniyetin değişim ve dönüşümü teknik ilerlemelere ve bilime kayıtsız kalmamakla mümkündür. Ahmet Mithat, değişimin, halkın eğitim ve kültür seviyesinin artmasıyla mümkün olabileceğini savunmuştur.
Only the use of archival documents to understand historical and social phenomena cannot close the gap during the transition of events. It is possible to cover this gap with travelbooks that are subjective and literary text. In this study, economic characteristics, educational and cultural institutions, sociological dynamics and social spaces of Europe in the nineteenth century were discussed based on the travel book of Ahmet Mithat Efendi. Ahmet Mithat has written this travel book in order to explain the development of Europe in science and technology. The aim of this study is to reveal the view of Europe from the perspective of an Ottoman intellectual and traveler, Ahmet Mithat Efendi, from the perspective of sociological opportunity. Content analysis method was used in the study. Using this method has enabled us to understand the travel text and create an analysis method in which text interpretation is highlighted. Content analysis; In order to explain the historical background of the travelogue, the common information has been scanned and evaluated. The contents of the text were subjected to thematic analysis. Themes such as economy, politics, symbols, education, art, culture and civilization, which point to the whole of the text, were found through the thematic analysis approach. Ahmet Mithat, who was critical of Europe during his travels, made comparisons between Europe's institutions from time to time. According to Ahmet Mithat Efendi, European society is advanced in science and technique. In this respect, the fact that Europe is taken as a material example shows that in doing so, the spiritual aspects of the East should not be abandoned. Ottoman needs a change. According to Ahmet Mithat, the change and transformation of a civilization is possible by not being indifferent to technical advances and science. In this context, Ahmet Mithat argued that the change could only be possible if the education and culture level of the people increased.
