Özet

Background and Design: Melasma is a common acquired disorder characterized by irregular macular hyperpigmentation involving sun-exposed areas of skin. Multiple etiologic factors are responsible for the occurrence of disease. The physiologic changes in pregnancy are thought to cause melasma of pregnancy (mask of pregnancy). The purpose of this study was to investigate an association among mask of pregnancy, skin type, family history of melasma, body mass index, gravity, weight and sex of the child. Materials and Methods: A hundred-ninety-six pregnant women were enrolled in the study. Demographic data, skin type and body mass index before and after pregnancy of the cases were noted. The clinical patterns and family history of melasma, weight and sex of the child were recorded. The findings were evaluated statistically. Results: Melasma was detected in ninety-two (46.9%) pregnant women. There are significant association among melasma, positive history of melasma in mother and skin type III (p<0.05). Extrafacial melasma was noted in one case (1%). The most common type was centrofacial type (72.8%). Conclusion: We think that a positive history of melasma in mother and skin type III are important factors together with the physiologic changes in the occurrence of mask of pregnancy.
