Özet
The spindle of a machine tool is a very important component which directly affects the quality of the workpiece. A spindle having excessive deflection is detrimental to the life of bearing and to the accuracy of workpieces. Good design requires that the stiffness is obtained with the minimum of manufacturing cost and of material. A method of designing and optimising spindles is described based on an interactive computer program. The program run on PC computers. It computes the deflection, slopes and angles of twist of spindles of varying cross section and then searches for an optimum design. The program has been applied to the optimisation of an existing lathe spindle and the results are reported.
