Özet

The artist, while painting, generally starts out from the images which have been effective in their lives. These images sometimes rise from artist's dreams, tradition and some other past experiences. When the history of the art of Turkish painting is examined, it is seen that, some artists nourish from calligraphy, some from social events and some from tradition. Regardless their source of nourishment, these images which have been internalized by the artist and reflected on their works generally become an important starting point for the artist. Painter Neset Gunal's scarecrow paintings which are important for the art of Turkish painting are the reflections of scary human-scarecrow images which are made to protect vineyards, gardens and fields from birds and other harmful animals which are traced back to the childhood of the artist. It is known that, scarecrow is used against evil eye depending upon the shamanist beliefs of Turkish people in pre-Islamic period. Turks believed that, not only living creatures but also non-living things were attacked by the evil eye. Therefore, it comes to be known that scarecrows are often used in many places against evil eye and to protect crops in fields and gardens from harmful animals. Neset Gunal is a socio-realist artist, and he depicts the Anatolian people's struggle for life in plain language. His scarecrow paintings have an important place in his work. Although the scarecrow is considered as rag doll aimed at protecting fields and gardens and based on the image of fear which is included in the traditional in Anatolian culture, in Neset Gunal's paintings, it is reflected as a part of the people's lifestyle which is dependent on soil. These paintings depict rural people's struggles with soil and poverty. The people have big hands and bare feet which are the symbolic expressions of being able to overcome fears. This investigation is needed because these paintings which sincerely illuminate the image of scarecrow have an important place in the art of Turkish painting.
