With their monumental rectangular prism bulks, the portals are one of the prominent elements of bulk formation of Turkish-Islamic art and they have become the dominant element of the structures with their different designs. The portals, which are considered as gate of paradise in religious architecture, have developed depending on gate arrangement tradition in religious architecture. The niche-covered portal design, especially shaped by muqarnas items, showed a consistent development during the Ottoman period. In the mosque design of the Ottoman period, it is posisble to see the most flamboyant and monumental samples of the portals in the mosques built by the sultans or sultanas.
