With the French occupation, contact with the West was established, leading to political, cultural, sociological, scientific, and literary transformations in Egypt. Foremost among these transformations was the serious critique and preservation of the classical scholarly heritage, especially in literature. One of the prominent platforms where literary culture was critically examined was al-Risālah journal. Founded by its owner and editor Ahmad Hasan al-Zayyāt, this journal left a colossal cultural legacy through its weekly publications from 1933 to 1953, amounting to 1,025 issues. al-Risālah included articles on history, culture, and politics, as well as discussions on Arabic literature, poetry, stories, language, and rhetoric. This study comparatively analyzes a selection of articles published in al-Risālah that involve debates between proponents of renewal (tajdīd) and the conservative defenders of classical rhetoric. In these articles, which are written as mutual refutations, proponents of renewal often criticized classical rhetoric through structural critiques, such as its relationship with other sciences, as well as through critiques based on concepts and definitions. In response, the defenders of classical rhetoric accused the critics of superficiality and ignorance of classical literature, countering the critiques with evidence drawn from classical works.
