To investigate possible histopathological damage and changes in trace element concentrations in aorta following cigarette smoke exposure, we exposed experimental group of rats to 10% concentration of cigarette smo-ke 1 hour each day for 90 consecutive days. Shamexposed control rats were inhaled roomair under similar condition. At the end of the experiment, specimens prepared from aorta were examined histopathologically. The iron, calcium and magnesium contents of aorta were determined by using atomic absorption spectrophoto-metty technique. Although there was no pathological finding in sham exposed control group, grade I to II atherosclerotic degeneration was observed in all smoke-exposed animals. The iron and calcium contents of aorta were found to be significantly higher in smoke exposed rats than those of the sham exposed control (p<0:05). Magnesium contents of aorta were lower in experimental group compared to the control animals (p<0.05). It is suggested that, enhanced iron and calcium together with decreased magnesium content of artery wall following smoke exposure can promote atherogenesis by increasing lipid peroxidation.
