Özet
Bu çalışma çerçevesinde amaç, Marx’ın sosyalist devrim ütopyasının, içerisinde
karakterlerin kapitalist sistemin kurbanları haline getirildiği Dick’in distopyaları
Philip K. Dick’in üç romanı Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? , Ubik ve The
Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch irdelenmektedir.
İlk bölüm, yazarın geçmişi hakkında bilgi vermek için Philip K. Dick’in hayatı
Üçüncü, dördüncü ve beşinci bölümlerde, Do Androids Dream of Electric
Sheep? , Ubik ve The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch romanları, karakterlerin
Bu çalışmada, Marksist ütopyanın, Philip K. Dick’in seçilmiş
romanlarında anlatılan kapitalist distopyaya çoktan yenik düştüğü okuyucuya
gösterilmektedir.
Within the scope of this study, the aim is to give a Marxist criticism of science fiction by analysing how the Marxist utopia of socialist revolution is defeated by Dickian dystopia in which the characters are victimized by the capitalist system, and to indicate that this system creates an illusion of utopia in the society through the fetishism of commodities, consumerism, advertising and the other ideological apparatuses, which eventually drags the characters into a state of despair, loss of authenticity and reality. In this perspective, three of Philip K. Dick’s novels, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? , Ubik, and The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch are scrutinized. The first chapter enlightens the reader on Philip K. Dick’s life and literary career in order to give information about the author’s background. The second chapter makes a detailed survey of the concepts related to capitalism and dystopian science fiction. The chapter includes an outlook on the late-stage capitalism, commodity fetishism and the consumer culture under the perspectives of Marxist economists and theoreticians, particularly of Karl Marx, Jean Baudrillard, Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer. The third, fourth and the fifth chapters examine Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? , Ubik, and The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch as capitalist dystopias that focus on the characters’ deception with the ideas of equality and freedom. The study concludes by stating that the Marxist utopia has already succumbed to the capitalist dystopia narrated in Dick’s selected novels.
