Saadetli günleri Sultan Abdülaziz’in katlinden sorumlu
In the Ottoman Empire, the women who were able to come to the fore the most were the mothers of the sultan, who gave birth to a son to the sultan and became the "Valide sultan" when this prince ascended the throne, and who were able to direct their son and establish dominance over the state. Just as the sultan was the ruler of the state, the Valide Sultan was the ruler of the harem. The most unlucky among the women of the dynasty were the sultans who were the daughters and sisters of the sultan. These sultans were girls who were raised to be married off when the time came for the survival of the state. Cemile Sultan was married off to Mahmud Celaleddin Pasha by her father Sultan Abdülmecid in a magnificent wedding in 1858. The sultan, who loved her husband very much, had six children from this marriage. Her blissful days came to an end when her husband Mahmud Celaleddin Pasha, who was held responsible for the assassination of Sultan Abdülaziz, was tried and exiled to Taif in 1880. Although Cemile Sultan told her brother Abdülhamid II about her husband's innocence and begged him to return home, all her pleas were in vain. Cemile Sultan was very saddened when she received the news of the death of her husband in exile in 1884. The successive deaths of her husband and her children trapped Cemile Sultan in an endless period of mourning. Sultan wore brown and black clothes and did not leave her palace and devoted herself to charity work. Although the difficulty of being a woman appeared in different dimensions in every period, being a woman belonging to a dynasty made things even more complicated. In this thesis, Cemile Sultan, an Ottoman Sultan in the process of modernisation, is discussed both as a woman and as a member of the palace. Cemile Sultan, like other sultans, did not have any financial problems. However, the depressions caused by her sufferings affected her psychologically more.
