The problems caused by today's rapid urbanization have become significant in the management of cities and metropolitan areas. With the effect of technological advancements and industrialization, problems related with management, planning, engineering and natural resources are increasingly becoming hazardous especially for those living in cities and city management is to be handled based on information system. Therefore, it is compulsory to use Urban Information Systems (UIS) to manage cities better and make optimal use of information. In Turkey where UIS development works are carried out rapidly, Local administrations simultaneously carry out studies to form Municipality Management Information System and Urban Information System. MIS (Management Information System) database which was previously kept only as automation of registry is integrated with the Urban Information System by relating it with geographical information. In Turkey, for the integration and use MERNIS (Central Demographic Information System), TAKBIS (Land Registry Cadastres Information System) and National Address Information System projects in UIS studies, municipalities need spatial base map. The production and updating of these base maps which are used in Urban Information System studies is a must. The compulsion to form "UIS" stated in Municipal Law gave acceleration to the development of this system in municipalities. Within this scope, problems encountered in UISs emerged in Turkey. In this study, the workings of Osmaniye Municipality has made so far to develop Management Information System and Urban Information System and their aims and the problems encountered in this process are discussed and presented.en_US
