Özet
This study aims to analyze the motivation of students at the Department of German Language and Literature (GLL) in the Faculties of Letters and to develop suggestions for the rearrangemants in the programme. Descriptive research design is followed in this study. A Likert type scale has been developed to learn the opinions of the students on the subject. The instrument which consists of 27 items has been administered to a sample of 225 students and the data obtained were analyzed according to frequencies and percentages. In the light of the data obtained, students of the department of GLL learn German as a second foreign language after having learned English. Hence, the language education received in the preparatoryclass has a crucial importance to determine their success level in the department of GLL. The influence of instrumental motivation is at medium-level. In the department, it has been observed that their ideal was not to study in the department of GLL and their school readiness is also at medium-level. It has also been deduced that due to lack of motivation, students do not put enough effort into their studies in the department. However, we foresee that extracurricular activities may increase students' motivations. As in line with the results of this study, it has been revealed that some updates should be made in the curriculum of the department of GLL so as to make it more student-centred, project-oriented and inclusive of extracurricular activities.
