The essential oil from aerial parts of Mentha aquatica L. (Lamiaceae) was obtained by hydrodistillation. The oil content was 0.37% (v/w), on a dry weight basis. The oil composition was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Altogether 31 compounds were identified accounting for 93.2% of the oil. 1,8-cineole (55.3%) was the most abundant component with appreciable amounts of carvacrol (9.3%) and sabinene (6.7%). The oil shows an interesting antibacterial activity, mostly against Gram + bacteria.en_US
