Cauda equina syndrome is a neurological state with bilateral ischiatic pain, lower extremity weakness, and bladder and bowel dysfunction due to multiple compressive neuropathies of the lumbar and sacral nerves. Even though the relationship between cauda equina syndrome and voiding dysfunctions is a well known fact, data on the clinical management of the condition is limited. The aim of this paper is to review the pathophysiological relationship between voiding dysfunctions and cauda equina syndrome and to refresh our knowledge about the clinical approach to this group of patients.
