dc.description.abstractHeavy metal pollution of wastewaters is an important environmental problem, which may affect micro-organisms and other living organisms in many rivers and lakes around the heavily industrialised regions. There are also a number of factories in such areas, as it is the case of Konya, in Turkey, discharging their wastewaters either directly in the environment or in the wastewater system. In this study, the removal of chromate from artificial wastewater, simulated as the wastewater of a leather factory, was investigated. Poplar (Populus alba L.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L) were used as chromium-adsorbent materials. A chromate solution with concentrations of 2.5 and 0.64 mM, respectively, prepared by dissolving the analytical grade potassium chromate in distilled water, was used as the simulated waste sample, the result being that the maximum amount of chromate adsorbed was of about 72 % and 65 %, respectively, as depending on the concentration used.en_US
