Özet
This study aimed to diagnose the cognitive structure of university science pupils regarding the topic energy relationships and energy flow in organisms. The study was carried Out using a word association test on 150 students studying at the Selcuk University. A word association test comprising 10 key concepts 'sunlight energy, photosynthesis, respiration, producer, consumer, separator, oxygen, carbon dioxide, ATP, glucose' was applied to the students, and concept maps were drawn according to the frequency table prepared from the answers given to the chosen key concepts. It is seen that the highest number of associations are, in descending order, Sunlight - photosynthesis, producer - plants and discriminator saprophyte. Although the students have responded to all the key concepts, it Could be observed that they do not perceive the relationship between the concepts as a complete network. From this result, it is apparent that students experience very limited cognitive learning during their education. The proposal was developed on the importance of research results from the perspective of biology education, and the use of word association tests as all educational tool.
