Abstract
Doğa ve çevreyi korumada eksik kalan bakış açılarımızın ve bilincimizin tamamlanmasında, filmlerin etkili öğretim materyalleri olarak katkılarının tartışılması kaçınılmaz bir gerekliliktir. Bu çalışmanın amacı bir bilim-kurgu filmi olan Avatar filminin, bir öğretim materyali olarak doğa ve çevre eğitimi açısından düşündürdüklerinin incelenmesidir. Çalışmada veri analizi olarak içerik analizi kullanılmıştır. Filmde, insan egemen tutum vurgusu içinde dünyanın sahip olduğu doğayı ve doğal kaynakları tüketen insanlara karşı Pandora'yı korumaya çalışan halkın, doğa mücadelesi anlatılmaktadır. Bilim ve teknolojinin ancak doğru ellerde evrendeki düzeni korumaya yardımcı olabileceği vurgulanmaktadır. Filmin kahramınının yeni yaşam şartlarına uyumu sırasında öğrenme süreçlerine doğrudan katılınan, disiplinli bir eğitim ile nelerin başarılabileceği, öğrenicinin yetenekleri ve isteğinin öğrenmede ne denli etkili olduğu gözler önüne serilmektedir. Ayrıca, doğanın sahibi değil, parçası olduğumuz fikri ile bütüne ait olmanın yaratacağı büyük gücün farkında olunmasının da altı çizilmektedir. Filmin etik ve sorumlulukla ilgili vurgularının, davranışlarımızın doğurduğu sonuçlarla ilgili farkındalığı arttırmaya katkıları olduğu söylenebilir. Avatar filmi, doğa/çevre eğitiminin oluşturmaya çalıştığı davranışlara ait kapsamlı vurguları nedeniyle etkili bir öğretim materyali olarak önemli katkılar yapabilir
We believe that it is absolutely necessary to make use as instructional material of the movies in ecology-education since they play an important role in enlarging people’s learning and understanding capacities and hence helps them to grasp what goes on beneath the surfaces. In the field of ecology-education, visual materials, especially movies are very functional in raising awareness about environmental issues. Thus, the aim of this paper is to analyze Avatar, a science fiction movie, in relation to ecology-education and environmental issues as a instructional material. Content analysis was used in the analysis of data collected. In the movie, the struggle between the nature-friendly indigenous people of Pandora against the human-centered/ human-dominated and abusive human race, who exploits the nature and the natural sources of the whole universe is depicted. In Avatar, it is shown that science and technology can help us to preserve the universal order if only they do not fall into the wrong hands. Moreover, the scenes illustrating the adaptation process of the protagonist to his new life circumstances reveal how important a learner’s disciplined, direct participation in the learning process as well as his motivation and skills. Furthermore, in the movie, it is emphasized that human beings are not the owners of the universe, but are just part of it like as it is. In addition to these, the parts of the movie in relation to ethics and responsibilities urge the audience to think about the consequences of our actions as human beings. Taking all these things into consideration, it can be suggested that Avatar, the movie as instructional material can be used to raise consciousness about environmental issues and in the ecology-educations to implement nature-friendly principles.
