Özet
The relationship established between unemployment and the increasing social problems of our day has become a starting point for many research studies. It was researched through a multi-disciplinary approach in many countries whether there was a causal relationship between unemployment and suicide, which is of vital importance as one of these social problems, and it was found that, in general, there was a significant relationship between these two variables. In this sense, the relationship between these two social problems in Turkey between the years 1974 and 2007 was evaluated in the present study. The elationship between unemployment and suicide was first investigated by using theoretical models. Based upon Durkheim's Theory of Anomie, unemployment was accepted as one of the socio-economic reasons behind suicide in terms of the inequitable division of labor. This relationship, which is also supported by a number of important studies in the literature, was also evidenced by the VAR analysis which was conducted by using the data of the mentioned period. The study was concluded with the result that there was a significant relationship between the issues of unemployment and suicide in Turkey.
